Place of BirthBhāvnagar, Gujarat, India, Asia
BiographyJyoti Bhatt studied painting at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda (1950-56) and at Vanasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan (1953). Upon returning to Baroda in 1966 as faculty at MSU, he became a founding member of the Baroda Group of Artists and joined Group 1890 alongside several other printmakers represented in this exhibition. The shapes of the head and torso in these prints are filled with figures, objects, symbols, and words selected from Indian religion and folklore, and are written in Gujarati, Sanskrit, and English scripts. They reference deities, such as Shiva, and religious concepts, such as Formlessness and Illusion.
