Established in 1950, the printmaking department at the Faculty of Fine Arts at M. S. University, Baroda became the nucleus of printmaking activity in the city by the 1970s. Rini Dhumal's studies and subsequent teaching at the university situated her as one of the leading printmakers in Baroda. Dhumal's passion for painting and integration of painterly brushstrokes are visible in her prints like this one. In Coal Miner, the viewer is confronted with the arresting stare of a figure emerging from an amber/flame-colored arched doorway. Recognized for her technical virtuosity, Dhumal also trained at the renowned Atelier 17 under S. W. Hayter and Krishna Reddy between 1975-76.
