• About the materials with which she works, the artist has said: “In traditional papier mâché sculpture, the inner paper-and-glue substance is hidden beneath plaster and/or paint. In my work, I want to explore what is beneath the surface, not gloss over it. I intentionally feature, rather than conceal, the materials of which my sculptures are composed. Paper from newspapers, magazines, and sometimes old books are used to flesh out my sculptures.”
• Among the topics that inspire Beeman: “women’s issues and issues of social justice … [and] “preciousness of life, the transience of happiness and health, the tragedy and humor in the human condition, the fragility of relationships, and the many, unexpected sources of wisdom.”
• The artist’s biology and entomology background have influenced her depictions of bugs and other creatures. Beeman earned a bachelor of science in biology from Radford University in Virginia. She has a master of science in entomology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
