Biography• Nevelson was born in Pereiaslav, Russia near what is now Kyiv, Ukraine
• At 5 years old, she immigrated with her family to the United States.
• She moved to New York in 1920 and studied at the Art Students League.
• In 1920 she married Charles Nevelson, moved to New York and had a son. The couple separated in the 1930s and divorced in 1941. In 1931-32, Nevelson moved to Germany and studied with Hans Hoffman. She then worked on a mural project as an assistant to Diego Rivera and as a teacher for the Works Progress Administration.
• She had her first solo exhibition with Nierendorf Gallery in New York in 1941.
• In 1943, she began her Farm assemblages, in which pieces of wood and found objects were incorporated.
• Nevelson is best known as a large-scale sculptor of her monumental walls and outdoor works. She worked primarily with wood and found objects that were painted black to create her signature monochromatic style.
• In addition to sculpture, Nevelson has produced drawings, paintings, collages, and print editions in lithography, etching, and screenprinting.
