BiographyMassachusetts artist Staake is best known as a children’s book and magazine cover illustrator. His work was featured in the Beach Museum of Art 2002 exhibition, Beyond Oz: Children’s Book Illustration from the Region. This self-portrait was part of an exhibition of graphic work from the museum’s 2008 exhibition Blab!: A Retrospective. Staake’s November 17, 2008 The New Yorker cover, Reflection, commemorates Barack Obama’s election as the nation’s first African American president. TIME named the work number one in its list of 10 Top Magazine Covers of 2008; the image has been declared the most popular New Yorker cover of all-time.
