Gujarāt
Gujarāt was part of the Gupta Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries. Its name refers to the Gurjaras, who controlled the region during the 8th-9th centuries. It became an independent sultanate in 1401. Large areas came under the influence of British East India Company in 1818. It became a province in British India after 1857.
