Term: Vārānasi

One of seven sacred Hindu cities; it was the base of Aryan religion and philosophy by the 2nd millennium BCE. It was part of the trade routes that comprised the Silk Road. The city declined under Muslim rule beginning in 1194, and was later revived during Marāṭhā rule. Vārānasi is visited by over one million pilgrims every year.
