Description

  •  The Italian Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi is known for his commitment to the poor and adherence to a modest lifestyle, expressed through various labors, including sweeping the church. Francis is also known as the patron of animals and nature; in art he is often shown preaching to the birds.

  •  In subject, style, and technique, Munce’s etchings reflect the influence of old master artists such as Rembrandt (see link below).

  •  Etching is a process in which an artist incises an image in a metal plate with a corrosive substance and presses ink into the grooves formed before printing. Like Rembrandt, Munce repeatedly and unusually reworks the surface of his printing plates, removing and redeveloping parts of the image through vigorous burnishing.

  •  Munce has said: “I think that I am primarily a storyteller. My function as a visual artist is to create a two-dimensional formal structure that will best contain the story being told. I am always trying to create a sense of space that has somehow been altered or transformed by an event.”
