On view• Chihuly visited Kansas in 1996 to meet Beach Museum of Art architect Arthur Andersson before designing this sculpture. The artist worked with a team of assistants in Seattle to execute the glass components, which were then assembled in Kansas.
• Chandelier weighs about 1,600 pounds and is composed of over 300 hand-blown forms attached by wire to a steel armature.
• During his 1996 visit to Kansas, Chihuly toured the area and learned about controlled prairie burning. Museum curator Bill North has said that the artist’s exposure to this practice inspired the color and shape of Chandelier. “Rebirth through fire can be linked to glass production itself,” North observed.
