Brejcha, a native of Ellsworth and Holyrood, Kansas, attended Fort Hays State University and later established the glass program at the University of Kansas, acting as its director from 1976 to 1991. He attributes his versatile skills with glass to the apprenticeship system favored by the University of Wisconsin, where he received his master’s degree in fine arts. He worked under glass artist Harvey K. Littleton.
