The city was sacked by Muslim Arabs 634 CE. It rose to importance as a religious, trade, and cultural center on the Silk Road in the 8th century. It was nearly destroyed by Mongols in 1258, and conquered by Tamerlane in 1401. It was taken by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1534, became part of the Ottoman Empire 1638. Later, it was taken by the British in 1917.
