Sanat KarIndia, 1935 - 2023

Kar is widely recognized for a wood intaglio technique he developed in the early 1970s. According to Charles Stroh, the artist used custom-made tools to engrave and scratch a wood matrix and produce noticeable depth and texture in the completed print.

Kar graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata and became an instructor of printmaking at the prestigious Kala-Bhavana Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1974. He co-founded two artist societies in Kolkata between 1950 and 1960.

Kar participated in the 1970 Smithsonian Printmaking Workshop led by American artist Paul Lingren (1923-1989). Also in that workshop were printmakers represented in this exhibition: Devraj Dakoji, Amitabha Banerjee, and K. Laxma Goud.
