Somnath Hore

Artist Info
Somnath HoreBangladesh, 1921 - 2006

Born in Chittagong during British colonial rule in India, Hore witnessed rapidly evolving social and political changes in his country. He used markings, burning, and cutting techniques on the metal plates of his prints to represent such events as the Bengal Famine of 1943, the catastrophic bombing of Chittagong in 1942, and the Tebhaga peasant unrest of 1946. Hore’s early prints appeared in such journals of the Communist Party as Janayuddha and People’s War.
