Osa’s self-portrait hints at his special interest in seventeenth-century Dutch artists. The composition includes a calendar with an image of Vermeer’s painting Girl with a Red Hat. It also incorporates a mirror in the background evocative of the windows Vermeer often included in his compositions, or suggestive of the mirror Jan van Eyck included in his famous Arnolfi Wedding.
