Description
This portrait of Curry's maternal grandfather, John Steuart, bears a striking resemblance to the artist's illustrations of Henry Fleming, the protagonist of Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. Curry often incorporated likenesses of friends and family into his work. The drawing, rendered with the aid of a projection of a smaller photograph, is believed to have been a presence in the artist's childhood home.
