Description
• Like the parents featured in My Friend Flicka, Curry’s father and mother were ranchers. They had two properties, one outside of Winchester, Kansas, and another near Scottsdale, Arizona.

• Curry’s first art lessons began on the family farm in Kansas. He sketched animals, including pigs, cows, and horses. The family owned draft horses, and Curry often rode one to school.

• Mary O’Hara’s novel Flicka was released in 1941; a film adaption appeared in 1943. Curry asked for stills from the movie to develop ideas for his 1944 illustrations.
